David Spears

Intellectual Property Attorney

Inventions are the heart and soul of industry, and Burris Law patent attorney David Spears believes that protecting those intellectual property assets has never been more critical in domestic and foreign jurisdictions.

For individual inventors, companies, and start-ups, alike, David advocates for the most robust patent protections possible and becomes a trusted advisor in developing directed patent strategies. He knows that patents provide freedom of movement in the industry, especially in a crowded field with many competitors or in an area dominated by one player. His work ensures that proprietary inventions are fully patent protected and that enterprises can compete with confidence.

David’s experience in shepherding an invention to patent is proven, from start to finish. From working with the inventor to understand the design to writing, submitting, and prosecuting an application, he knows the system well—both in the United States and abroad. With integrity, creativity, and professionalism, he effectively communicates with examiners at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, timely addresses office actions, and vigorously researches and argues appeal briefs before USPTO administrative law judges when necessary. He takes pride in his ability to maintain a positive attitude through tough prosecutions and think on his feet when challenged.

David attributes his success in completing client patents to the trifecta of discipline, communication, and teamwork. While undertaking a heavy academic schedule to earn his mechanical engineering degree at Michigan State University, he also balanced gridiron demands. Between academics and football, he developed the essential skills he uses today—time management, integrity, and persistence.

“Engineering taught me a lot, but playing on the Michigan State football team probably taught me more,” says David. “On the football field, success required understanding and respecting the intricacies of everyone’s role and, importantly, the need to be on the same page with teammates to accomplish a common goal. It’s a formula I use every day—keep communication lines open, pay attention to details, respect others’ jobs, and be a valuable team player. That’s my approach to achieving high quality, valuable patents for my clients.”

Industry Experience

While earning his mechanical engineering degree, David secured real-world experience, interning with companies in two of the most competitive fields—automotive and utilities. More recently, as a patent attorney he has covered the refrigeration systems, automotive, consumer product, piping systems, and electromechanical manufacturing industries, among others. Whatever the sector, David is a quick study dedicated to finding the most effective pathway to protect valuable inventions and help his clients realize their goals.
