Kelly Burris provided insight to Bloomberg Law reporter Annelise Gilbert about unique intellectual property rules applying to Formula 1.

In Formula 1 racing, every nanosecond matters. Kelly said that this pressure cooker environment has led to innovation in areas including advanced materials that have been introduced in the consumer automotive market. She noted that “[t]he reality is, in Formula 1 racing, if you come up with an innovation, everyone’s going to be able to use it under the rules.” She added that this rule does not prevent those teams from patenting these discoveries and licensing them outside of the racing community.

Kelly was interviewed in part for her knowledge of IP, racing, and the auto industry. She has assisted Ford Motor Company with patent applications across a broad range of technologies including advanced materials and manufacturing.
