William Kohler

Intellectual Property Attorney

William is a former general counsel of major manufacturing companies and focuses his practice on clients’ intellectual property and commercial arrangements. Mr. Kohler has advised some of the world’s largest automakers and suppliers on domestic and international projects, and led some of industry’s larger and more complicated M&A transactions, technology transactions and commercial arrangements (including specialized supply agreements, joint ventures and distribution networks). He helped to establish two of the automotive industry’s largest Tier 1 minority supplier joint ventures.

Mr. Kohler is an authority on legal issues relating to autonomous and connected vehicles. His work in that area has involved investment transactions, technology development and licensing arrangements, as well as legislative and regulatory issues. He is the author of “Current Law and Potential Legal Issues Pertaining to Automated, Autonomous and Connected Vehicles,”published in 2015 in the Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal (downloaded more than 3,000 times).

Mr. Kohler is a board member of the Connected Vehicle Trade Association. CVTA is an association established to facilitate the interaction and advance the interests of entities involved in the vehicle communication environment. The organization enables the collaboration of companies, organizations, and governmental bodies engaged in developing bidirectional vehicle communications.

He is a board member of the Michigan District Export Council, and a member of the Motor Equipment Manufacturers Association, Government Affairs Committee and Regulatory Affairs Committee. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Council of Great Lakes Industries and the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce’s MichAuto Steering Committee. He has been designated as Top Corporate Counsel and Top Lawyer for Mergers & Acquisitions by dbusiness.

Mr. Kohler serves as a boxing coach for people with Parkinson’s through Rock Steady Boxing at Empire Muscle in Windsor, Ontario. He is a former Chair and Trustee of the Board of Trustees of the Friends School in Detroit, and a former Board Member of ORT.
